Asymptotic modeling of thin curved martensitic films

چکیده
We consider a thin curved film made of a martensitic material. The behavior of the film is governed by a free energy composed of a bulk energy term and an interfacial energy term. We show that the minimizers of the free energy converge to the minimizers of an energy depending on a two-dimensional deformation and one Cosserat vector field when the thickness of the curved film goes to zero. using Γ-convergence arguments.

Influence of aging temperature on phase transformation and mechanical behavior of NiTi thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering technique
In this study, NiTi thin films were deposited on the glass and NaCl substrates by means of magnetron sputtering method. The influence of aging temperature, over the range 300-500 oC, on phase transformation and mechanical properties of the sputtered NiTi thin films were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and nano-indentation assay, respectively. The DSC curves showed that the ag...
متن کاملPatterning of martensitic nanotwins
We perform the atomistic Monte Carlo simulations of formation of nanostructured martensites in nickel–titanium thin films. The results reveal the atomistically resolved patterning of martensitic nanotwins, including coarsening, branching and twinning within twins, as mediated by temperature and substrate constraints. A scaling law is derived to elucidate the physical effects governing the chara...
متن کاملComputational Analysis of Martensitic Thin Films using Subdivision Surfaces
This paper studies numerically the deformation of thin films made of materials undergoing martensitic phase transformations by using subdivision surfaces. These thin films have received interest as potential microactuators, and specifically a tentlike configuration has recently been proposed. The study of such configurations requires adequate resolution of inhomogeneous in-plane stretch, out-of...
متن کاملScaling of the Energy for Thin Martensitic Films
We study the scaling behaviour of thin martensitic films. Specifically we consider an elastic energy with two SO(3) invariant wells which are strongly incompatible in the sense of Matos and Šverák, but whose two-dimensional projections are compatible. We show that in a thin film of thickness the energy per unit height scales like h. This scaling lies in between the classical membrane theory (wh...
متن کاملA Finite Element Model for Martensitic Thin Films
A finite element approximation of the thin film limit for a sharp interface bulk energy for martensitic crystals is given. The energy density models the softening of the elastic modulus controlling the low-energy path from the cubic to the tetragonal lattice, the loss of stability of the tetragonal phase at high temperatures and the loss of stability of the cubic phase at low temperatures, and ...
